Originally a game-book (solo play) series written by Joe Dever, the story focuses on the fictional world of Magnamund, where the forces of good and evil fight for control of the planet. The protagonist in the original stories is Lone Wolf, last of his caste of warrior monks known as Kai Lords.

In 2004 Mongoose Publishing created a role-playing game based on the stories, using the d20 game mechanic. They also produced, in 2010, a separate Lone Wolf Multiplayer Game Book which was close to the concepts of the original gamebooks.

In 2013 Cubicle 7 Entertainment announced that they intended to produce a Lone Wolf Adventure Game with the core rules appearing as a box set in 2015.
